Eccentric, romantic, tree-house accommodation in the Kwa-Zulu Natal Midlands

We left behind a beautiful sunny Pretoria just to arrive in a very cold and wet Natal Midlands a few hours later. Although it was cold, wet and miserable outside, upon entering the reception area of Sycamore the cozy fire and friendly faces of Gloria and Stefan made us feel warm and right at home.

Due to availability we decided on the Bottle Tree House and oh, what an excellent choice for us. It is the perfect romantic accommodation for two people, nestled behind its own fence, allowing undercover parking for your vehicle as well.

We were astonished by the beautiful woodwork surrounding us, every piece of furniture handcrafted to perfection. One can only but appreciate the work that Bruce put into creating each masterpiece, the time and effort shows clearly in the finishing touches of the doors, the spiral staircase, the window frames, etc.

We loved every aspect of “our” little cottage, the layout, the eccentric atmosphere, the cosy fireplace, the Jacuzzi spa bath, the outdoor but private shower on the deck, not to mention the beautiful views of the Drakensberg Mountains. Each tree-house offers tea and coffee facilities as well as a bar fridge to keep your drinks cold.

At dinner time we were treated to the most scrumptious and delicious home cooked meals. The butternut soup on Friday evening and beetroot soup on Saturday night was perfect for the cold weather, not to mention the chicken, roast, vegetables and other helpings that called for seconds. The home made banana and nut with melted chocolate desert on Friday evening was my favourite, ever so sorry that I opted for only a tiny piece as I was already so full from dinner. On Saturday night we were treated to traditional malva pudding with hot custard and fresh cream and I can honestly say that it was the best I have had in a long time.

Breakfast consisted of yoghurt and fresh fruit salad, muesli and other cereal and a warm breakfast served with toast, egg, fried tomatoe, sausage and bacon and not to forget the freshly brewed filter coffee and home-made, fresh out of the oven scones with strawberry jam - delicious!!!

The area has plenty to offer i.e. exploring the arts and crafts of the Midlands Meander, The Drakensberg Mountains, wildlife in Weenen Game Reserve, to mention but a few.

Overall we had a very enjoyable, relaxing weekend that came to end much too quickly, feeling the sadness of leaving behind a piece of tranquility that are not found in the city.

It was a privilege to be hosted by Gloria, Bruce and Stefan and we thank Lifestyle magazine for the opportunity and Sycamore Avenue Tree-houses for the hospitality afforded us during our stay. We will, for sure, be back a second time around.
